What it is

Kaikatsu CLUB, operated by Kaikatsu Frontier Inc. (part of the AOKI Holdings Group), is Japan's largest 24-hour manga and internet café chain with over 500 locations across all 47 prefectures. Far more than a traditional cybercafé, it offers semi-private reclining booths and sound-insulated lockable private rooms alongside free high-speed Wi-Fi, PCs, an unlimited drink bar, soft-serve ice cream, coin laundry, and showers (free at many locations). Because it calculates the cheapest time-pack rate automatically when you check out, travelers frequently use it as a budget daytime rest stop, luggage-drop workspace, or overnight hotel alternative. Keep in mind that it is strictly a members-only facility and local ordinances require presenting your physical passport on your first visit.

How to order

Entering, choosing a room, and paying at Kaikatsu CLUB follows a 5-step check-in and post-pay system:

  1. Register as a member on your first visit (Free): Membership is mandatory, though joining and annual fees are free (First-Time Guide). You can complete provisional registration on the Kaikatsu CLUB smartphone app and finalize registration at the in-store New Member Kiosk (`新規入会機`) by scanning your ID—or if you cannot download the app, register directly with staff at the manned front counter. You must present an original government ID (your physical passport or residence card) showing your name, date of birth, and current address.
  2. Check in at the self-register or front desk: Scan your membership card/app QR code at the check-in kiosk (`セルフレジ`), choose your preferred seat or room type (such as a Lockable Private Room, Reclining/Flat Booth, or Open Café Seat), and take your printed check-in slip (`入店伝票`).
  3. Enjoy the facilities, drink bar, and showers: Head to your assigned booth or room. During your stay, you can use the complimentary drink bar and soft-serve ice cream machine, read up to 50,000 manga volumes, use the shower room (free at many stores, paid at select stores per the Official Store Locator), or order hot meals. You can even change seat types for free during your stay.
  4. Follow the Lockable Private Room food rule: If you chose a Lockable Private Room (`鍵付完全個室`), police regulations prohibit bringing store-provided drinks (from the free drink bar), soft-serve ice cream, or café food inside your locked room—consume those in the designated communal dining lounge outside the private rooms. (Convenience store food and drinks you bought outside the store are allowed inside lockable private rooms.)
  5. Scan your slip at checkout to pay: When you are ready to leave, scan your check-in slip at the self-checkout machine or front counter. The system automatically switches your stay to the cheapest applicable time-pack rate (`自動最適パック`), and you pay for your time and any ordered meals together.

FAQ

Q1: How much does it cost to use Kaikatsu CLUB? Rates vary by store location, day of the week, and seat type, but as a general guide (as of September 12, 2026), the first 30 minutes start around ¥300 and a 3-hour pack costs around ¥1,200–¥1,600 (with weekend surcharges). You do not need to choose a time pack in advance; the register automatically applies the cheapest rate when you leave.

Q2: Can foreign tourists register at Kaikatsu CLUB without the Japanese smartphone app? Yes. According to the Official First-Time Guide, if you cannot download the Kaikatsu CLUB app, you can complete your registration at the staffed front counter. Make sure to bring your physical passport (and a document/record showing your current address as required by local regulations).

Q3: Why can't I bring my free drink bar cup into a Lockable Private Room? Japanese police regulations governing fully enclosed, lockable rooms prohibit serving or consuming in-house restaurant/drink-bar items inside locked private rooms. You can still enjoy the free drink bar, soft-serve ice cream, and ordered meals in the designated communal dining lounge—and you are allowed to eat convenience store food bought outside the store inside your lockable private room.
